An adult is a person or animal who has reached complete growth.The biological meaning of the word means animals that have reached sexual maturity, and therefore capable of reproducing. For humans adults have significance that is shaped by the legal and social world. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor" an legal adult is a person who is at the point of majority, and therefore is regarded as autonomous, self-sufficient and dependable. They are also known as a "major". The age of 18 is as the age of legal maturity, however, this definition may differ by country, legal rights or mental development.

Adulthood is the time in the human lifespan when an individual has reached maturity both in physical and mental development. The age of adulthood typically begins at the age of 21. After middle age (starting at around 40) is the time to reach the age of old age (around age 60). Early adulthood begins between the ages of 18 and 30. The middle age stage begins from the mid-30s through to the 60s. Late adulthood starts at mid-60s. By the time we reach the age of early adulthood (20 to mid-40s), our physical maturation has been completed, however our weight and height may increase slightly. In the early years of our lives, we're physically and mentally at the peak. The strength of our muscles, the response timing, the ability to sense and cardiac function all reach their highest levels.
