Katarina began ice-skating at age five. Her natural talents began to show her admission was granted into the Karl-Marx-Stadt school that specializes in youngsters with athletic talent. Coach Jutta was also there. Witt was able to make her debut year in 1982, when she placed second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's grace and beauty have captivated the attention of everyone. Olympic success Katarina (now Witt) won the Women's Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. Four years later, she won an even tougher competition. Her free skate was a loss, but the gold medal was awarded to her because of her performances at both mandatory figures (short program) and the compulsory figures. Witt was the first woman to be a repeated winner of figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt, who made it big in the world of film and television as an actress before returning for figure skating, competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd even though she didn't win the medal. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
